- We don't know who they are at that point.In 3x02 (Kill Ari Part 2) after learning that Ziva did a profile on him and his team, Gibbs asks her if she knows about his first wife and his daughter and she said yes and that she was sorry.
- We see Gibbs pull out a flask, inscribed with words including 'Love Shannon and Kelly'.
- In the final two-part episode (Hiatus, parts 1 & 2), everything is revealed; Gibbs was married four times, not three, and with his first wife Shannon he had a daughter. We see Gibbs have flashbacks and dreams about his wife and daughter, fishing, horseback riding, camping, watching movies, and then we see him finding out they had been murdered and visiting their graves. We also see he considered committing suicide at one point. This is where Jenny investigates his past and finds out he was married in 1982 and two years later had a daughter.

| Season 4 |
- Now everyone knows his secret, but no-one really mentions it. Gibbs does talk about them a little bit with Jenny and Ducky.
- A lot of information about Shannon and Kelly was revealed in Hiatus Part II (end of Season 3). It is revealed that Gibbs and Shannon married in 1982 and Kelly was born in 1984. The reason for the deaths is revealed along with the fact that Gibbs was serving in Kuwait at the time of their deaths. They were murdered by a drug dealer for Shannon identifying him as a murderer. Before the trial, he shot Shannon and Kelly's driver and the two died in the car crash.

| Season 5 |
- Little mentions of Shannon and Kelly pop up; Ziva saying Gibbs was a father, a woman asking Gibbs if he had children, little things.
- We hear again how Shannon and Kelly followed Gibbs all the way to Camp Pendleton, and that's the last time he saw them.
- We learn that Gibbs still listens to their voices on an old taped recording of Kelly playing the piano in a concert with a message at the end. He had kept them a secret from Hollis, who is hurt when she finds out. Gibbs says he has put them behind him, but Hollis seems sceptical.

Season 6
|
- We learn more about Shannon and Gibbs' meeting. They lived in the same town, with Gibbs often seeing Shannon around. Finally they meet at the train station, and a new romance is born. Shannon came and taught Gibbs to make rules to live by, these are the rules that Gibbs now uses for his team.
- We know that Gibbs still longs for his daughter. In "Silent Night" he tells Quinn that he could get one wish for Christmas it would be to one more "chance to hug his daughter...but that can never be..." (Of course any parent would feel that way in his situation.)

SHEPARD: Did you know when Jethro was married that he had a daughter? DUCKY: No, that’s not possible. I know all three of Jethro’s ex-wives. They had no children. SHEPARD: With his first wife, Shannon, he did. They married in eighty, and two years later had a daughter, Kelly, who was born in eighty two. DUCKY: I can’t believe it. SHEPARD: There’s more. They were murdered when Jethro was fighting in Desert Storm. Shannon witnessed the shooting of a Marine in Oceanside. She identified the killer as Pedro Hernandez, a Mexican drug dealer working Camp Pendleton. An NIS Agent was assigned to protect her. A sniper shot him in the head while he was driving their van. He died instantly. Shannon and Jethro’s eight year old daughter Kelly were killed in the crash. |
