Local Boys (2002)
A hairy Mark Harmon in a surfing movie that has become a big favourite with the fans. Tell us what you think.

SilverStar48: A wonderful story about a widow trying to raise her two sons after her policeman husband is killed in the line of duty. The older boy (about 17 years old) has assumed the role of head of the house, taking on much too weighty a job since they are all still in mourning. They live near the California beaches and the boys love to surf. The younger son, about 10 years old, gets a new surfboard for his birthday. His big brother picks it out for him, but it's much to big for him to handle. Jim Wesley (Mark Harmon) just happens to be a world class surfer ... having made his mark by conquering huge waves in Hawaii. Jim, seeing the young boy wrestling with his new surfboard all on his own, paddles out to help him. Jim convinces him to bury his surfboard under the lifeguard tower rather than trying to wag the huge thing home and back again the next day. When the kid digs up the board the next day, Jim has exchanged it for a really nice yellow surfboard, just his size. The story continues with Jim and the boys' mom dating and sharing their past. It's a great movie with a great ending. As usual, Mark Harmon does a great job with this. His character has to win over the trust of the older boy, while maintaining the relationship he has begun with the younger one. Lots of emotions and conflicts ... very real to life.
