Brief Bio on his acting Career: Mark Harmon began his career guest-starring on TV series such as "Police Woman," "Emergency" and "Adam-12." He found success playing many roles, but his part as a doctor who contracted AIDS on "St. Elsewhere" could be considered a major breakthrough. Just prior to NCIS, he starred as CJ's ill-fated love interest/secret service agent Simon Donovan on "The West Wing." His character Leroy Jethro Gibbs was first introduced in the series JAG that led to the NCIS spinoff.

On the set of NCIS he uses a 1972 Airstream he restored himself.

"Pretty boy." Those were the two words that came to Don Bellisario's mind when he first considered hiring Mark Harmon as the star of his naval-themed CBS crime drama NCIS. How on earth, he wondered, could the six-foot-tall, salt-and-pepper-haired sex symbol who'd stolen hearts as a scamp in St. Elsewhere and Chicago Hope play tough-as-nails agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs from the Navy's elite crime investigative unit?
Before he was on NCIS he was on the movie Summer School (1988.) He was a real baseball fan that turned into a baseball player.

Before Mark was famous:
  • Mark worked as a sneaker salesman (which is why he has over 100 pairs of sneakers) and is also a former lifeguard and carpenter.

Interests/hobbies:
  • Swimming,
  • Tinkering in his workshop,
  • Horse riding on a ranch in Montana,
  • Country music
  • Running
  • Playing harmonica and a 4 string guitar.

Memorable Quotes:
  • "Gibbs is like a great hunting dog – he is just the guy you want in your fox hole, he is just the guy you want to ride the river with, I don’t know if he’s the guy you want to have dinner with."
  • Michael Weatherly stated when there were rumors of Mark leaving NCIS, "He's the spine of the show. Without him it's a show about jellyfish. We need our spine."
  • "Jethro doesn't think of himself as a hero, which is maybe what I like best about him. He's an old-school leader. People perceived this show to be one thing but it has proven to be something else. To me, what made the show different was how these characters were not predictable and there was humor. The real NCIS is a worldwide authority that was redefined by 9/11, so [the show] is terribly current. But Don will never let this get too serious. We're not surprised by the ratings — we know what we've been doing — but it feels really good.''
  • "Live every minute like the last. To try not to do anything I would regret when my last minute arrives."
  • "The difference between good and great is just a little extra effort."

Trivia:
  • Chosen as People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive. [1986]
  • Graduated *** Laude from UCLA, 1974, with degree in communications. Also played quarterback for UCLA Bruins, 1972-73 winning National Football Foundation Award for all-round excellence.
  • Worked as a carpenter before he hit it big.
  • Father, Tom Harmon, played for the University of Michigan Wolverines and won the 1940 Heisman Trophy emblematic of the best player in the nation.
  • Mark's father Tom was a WWII hero who won both the purple heart and the silver star.
  • His sister Kris was married to Rick Nelson. His niece is actress Tracey Nelson (Rick's daughter / Ozzie and Harriett's granddaughter) and his nephews are the singing group Nelson (twins).
  • Maternal grandfather, Frank Knox was Secretary of Navy during World War 2.
  • The hand tools that Mark Harmon uses on the set of NCIS are mostly his own. Those are the tools he uses in his own personal workshop.
  • Mary Hart believes that Mark Harmon's NCIS character Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs "has a great sense of humour, but his memory needs a little help."
  • Mark joined the NCIS production team as a producer at the beginning of Season 6.
  • When Mark was 13 years old, he found his first car. His father made him earn the money and buy it himself. For $300, Mark bought a 1928 Model Ford. Over 1 1/2 years, Mark worked to rebuild the vehicle. Once it was up and running, he drove it without a driver's license. One time, he was driving down the street and a cop pulled up along side him. Mark feared not being able to get his license until he was 21 if he got caught, so, he kept driving. After a while, the Cop was still alongside so Mark finally chanced a look at the cop. The cop gave him a thumbs up! Mark drove this vehicle and sold it when he was 20. He had taken pictures and documented the process when he rebuilt it. About 3-4 years ago, Mark was able to track down the new owner of the vehicle. Turns it out was the same exact one Mark had once owned. The owner offered to sell Mark back the vehicle, but for 300 times what Mark paid for it. The man also wanted Mark to replace the vehicle! Mark choose neither of these options.
  • Mark's 2 sons paid for part of their first vehicles upon getting their driver's license. Mark's oldest son, Sean, purchased an El Camino. Ty bought a 15 year old Volkswagen!
  • Before NCIS, Mark got his start doing the following: He quit law school. He did some construction as a roofer and a framer. He worked for an Ad firm for 4 years, then moved on to National Sales for Adidas. He left that job to become an actor.

One of my favorite curiosities of NCIS is the Boats. If I recall correctly, Leroy Jethro Gibbs has built 3 boats (2 while on the series, and one referred to in the past). They discussed one being complete and removed earlier in his life. The "second" one was while we began as an audience. Then, it "disappeared" and he soon started another one. Characters on the show questioned how he got the boat out. I remember one episode when someone said something about his having to take it apart to get it out. NO. He made it too well. Was there a secret panel? How would someone get a boat out of their basement.
