TONY MELTDOWN?

8th November

My co-blogger's entry yesterday was very interesting (see below), and it got me thinking about this; and I think we have to go further back in time.

Now for starters, we've been hearing snippets here and there about Tony's childhood, where there is more than a hint of child abuse, albeit mentally or physically; and as such Tony has built up a series of barriers around himself since a very long age to protect himself.

I think we'll agree he's pretty immature, yet at the same time, thinks nothing of putting his life on the line to protect those close to him (not unlike Gibbs there), or because the job requires it (see 1.20 Missing where he was drugged and thrown into a rat infested sewer, although eventually managed to find his way out), and given his ability to act has often gone undercover. Several of these undercover situations have gone awry to say the least, take 2.10 - Chained where he was shackled with a dangerous prisoner and was eventually found by Gibbs and Giblets in the driver's seat of car with said prisoner's brains blown out behind him. We know this upset Tony, when he feebly tells Gibbs 'He kinda liked him'. Next we have 2.22 SWAK - who in the 21st century falls prey to the bubonic plague?! Tony! Who survived simply because said virus strain had a self-destruction time limit. Shortly after this in 2.23 Twilight Kate his shot dead in front of him and he was sprayed with her blood - pretty tough even for the strongest of individuals, however, Tony soldiered on.

Next in 3.08 Under Covers, the situation went awry again, yet he willingly offered himself as victim so Ziva could escape and bring reinforcements, albeit at the last minute. Shortly after this in 3.09 Frame Up - he was framed by Abby's evil assistant Chip, and was only saved in the final hour, in the meanwhile being pitiful aware of how things would have gone had the case got to caught, and no doubt too (although no mention was made) about the treatment usually dealt out to cops who end up in prison. After this come the Hiatus episodes (3.23 & 3.24), where he has to deal with Gibbs being blown up, loss of memory, and being left to take over the team with 'you'll do'. Then when Gibbs comes back he finds himself demoted back to Senior Agent again without a by or leave, coupled with deep undercover mission Jenny has him on to get close to Benoit at whatever cost, the fact his emotions came into play was neither here nor there to Jenny. This of course ended badly with seeing his car blown up and knowing that he should have been in the car, then having to tell Jeanne their relationship was a farce, and then later accused of murder again (first time in Frame Up), and having to face Jeanne again, and reinforce his statement about their relationship being a farce for her benefit.

At the end of S5 in Judgement Day there was the whole fall out with Jenny and his guilty feelings, that he should have ignored her instructions about not following her, and that perhaps she might have survived.

His assignment as Agent Afloat, which in theory is a promotion, for someone like Tony could only be interpreted as a punishment, given the way it came about, plus the fact being the only cop on board a large ship is anything but enviable.

He comes back and things are still a little uneasy to begin with, and his team-mates don't exactly seem overjoyed to see him.

Tony rants at Gibbs in Cloak because he was kept in the dark over the operation, yet Gibbs lets him, he seems to realise Tony needs this, admittedly Ducky is there as a buffer. I don't see this as a meltdown, but a justified rant since he's no longer a junior agent, but a senior agent with several years standing, and he's just Gibbs' lapdog or loyal St.Bernard.

Tony discovers during Season 6 that Ziva is hiding things from the team, possibly working as a counterspy or being manipulated by Mossad (as was finally the case).

I think all things considered it's a wonder he hasn't had a meltdown of some kind, I mean let's face it's been a Tony whump from the beginning and Gibbs to a lesser extent. And I think Gibbs is not easy on him because he feels Tony can handle all this the same way he has. Gibbs has his boat and Tony has his films - we all know a lot of Tony's bragging about dates is very much a smokescreen to hide his loneliness.

It should be interesting to see what happens when his father re-appears, I wonder if we will get more of an insight of their relationship or Tony's childhood in the same way we did with Gibbs in Heartland.

Y con esto y un bizcocho se acabó lo que se dió.

HAS TONY HAD AN EMOTIONAL/MENTAL BREAKDOWN?

7th November 2009

Since the start of season 5, Tony's behavior has been erratic. His joking self has become sharper, with a nasty edge. Can this be the result of some sort of breakdown? I think it is. Let's take a look at the situation.

In the first episode of season 5, "Bury Your Dead", Tony's car is blown up. He believes this was done by Trent Kort and the CIA. The same morning he has to explain to Jeanne Benoit that he is not Professor Tony DiNardo, but NCIS Special Agent Tony DiNozzo, who was ordered to get close to her. In a few sentences he destroys her life, and to a degree, his own. He has just told the woman he loves that he has been lying to her. Jeanne does what any woman in that situation would do. She leaves him. Leaving behind a note telling him to chose. Tony makes his choice. He chooses his NCIS family.

In "Internal Affairs" Tony discovers he is the prime suspect for a murder. The murder of Rene Benoit, and the person accusing him is Jeanne. Again, he has to lie to her, when he tells her that it was all a lie. That he did not love her. One look at his face tells the viewer that this simply is not true. Then he faces the venom as Jeanne spits at him "I wish I had never met you."

The rest of season 5, into season 6, Tony became moody, his humor developing a nasty edge to it. He lashed out at those near him. Nasty digs at McGee and Ziva. He totally loses it with Gibbs in "Cloak", ranting and raving at him in autopsy.

He admits that he hasn't had a close physical relationship in some time. In fact the only human touch he has had is when Gibbs' head slaps him! Gibbs understands, but is unsympathetic, telling him to "live with it".

Deprived of Jeanne, he then fixates on Ziva. Developing an unhealthy obsession with her love life. His jealousy knows no bounds when Michael Rivkin appears on the scene. Only Tony knows whether his killing of Rivkin was motivated by self defense or jealousy.

When Ziva leaves him, choosing to stay behind in Israel, Tony is rudderless. Until they hear that the ship sank and Ziva is, they believe, dead. Only then does Tony develop a purpose. A horribly singled minded purpose reminiscent of Gibbs' pursuit of the killer of Shannon and Kelly.

Has Tony had a breakdown? Yes, I believe he has. Is he on the road to recovery? Beginning to rebuild his life? Only time will tell.

I'M BACK

6th November

First of all, I should like to apologise for my absence, but work is the culprit, I'm sure Gibbs would understand duty coming before pleasure .... Admittedly, I have had some free moments this last week but brain hasn't been up to write anything coherent beyond a 5 or 10 word stretch.

So, what's new? We know Robert Wagner will be playing Tony's father in an episode to be shown at beginning of the new year (Episode 7.12). Some of you may or may not know that Michael Weatherly played Robert Wagner in a TV film (or was it a mini series? Ooops! Now I'm not sure but no doubt someone will clarify this, please) based on the life of Wagner's wife, actress Natalie Wood, who died tragically during a boat trip.

Gibbs' dad will also be back in another episode again around Christmas (Episode 7.10 Faith).

What else?

CBS have finally confirmed this season will definitely be having 24 episodes!! Now that's great news since some series have had the number of episodes for this season reduced, but then of course, NCIS is undoubtedly the CBS flagship this season (appropriate considering it's a series about naval/marine agency).

NCIS Soundtrack Vol. 2 was released this week, I should be receiving mine shortly since it was pre-ordered, and those of you who haven't I can recommend this CD, and as yet I haven't heard it but the volume 1 was so good, this one just has to follow suit, plus the fact we have Michael Weatherly performing one of his unedited songs, which definitely has to be a scoop. And according to people who've heard a snippet of this song online, it's well worth the listening to - as if we expected anything less.

NCIS continues Nº1 in the TV audience ratings for the 6th consecutive week!!!!!! I think this where all fans break out with the Queen song 'We are the champions'.

What more can I say? Except: Ave NCIS! :-))

Y con esto y un bizcocho se acabó lo que se dió.

WHY DO YOU LIKE LEON VANCE

5th November 2009

Due to the excellent response to why I like Leon Vance, I thought I would revisit the territory. A number of people gave different reasons why they like the character. Many of my respondents hit on the "love to hate" angle. They like Leon Vance because he gives them a character to hate!

I would like to quote from two members on here who really summed up the essence of all the responses I got. Both in the thread and via private message.

Cassierules: I feel the friction between Vance, Gibbs, the team etc adds a wonderful new dimension to the show.

Det.Beckett: The guy does not get a lot of love on this board, but I think that is exactly what Mr Carroll and the writers are going for, so I would say the character is on a home run. Hidden past, computer skills, good instincts and a strong desire to keep NCIS safe, what's not to love?

Once again, my thanks to everyone who responded to my original blog. I really appreciate your input.
