FAVORITE RECURRING CHARACTERS - PAST AND PRESENT

8th August 2009

There has been a lot of discussion on here of late on recurring characters we would like to see more of. But do we have favorites, from season 1 to season 6? Who and why? I thought I would share my favorites with you today.

  • Tobias Fornell. I was taken with Fornell when we met him in the very first episode "Yankee White". I loved the way Fornell has developed into a friendly adversary and obvious friend of Gibbs. The character is sharp, intelligent and very much old school. He and Gibbs are very much the old dogs surrounded by yapping, over enthusiastic puppies. My favorite Fornell episode would have to be season 4's "Smoked". The scene in autopsy with Ducky, Gibbs and Jenny is a classic. A close second is the season 5 episode "Identity Crisis", his dressing down of his young subordinate was a great scene. Another great scene came in season 6's "Nine Lives", when Gibbs turns up at the Hoover Building to provide moral support when Fornell has to face his Director.
  • Trent Kort. Wasn't too impressed when he was introduced to us in season 4, but the character grew on me. I tend to refer to him now as "My Favorite Weasel". I love the adversarial relationship he has with Tony. I do wonder if that will eventually grow into respect and then friendship ala Gibbs and Fornell. Best episode for Kort was, in my opinion, "Dead Reckoning". We saw a lot of Kort in this one, as well as the respect that he and Gibbs have for each other. Gibbs went so far as to cover Kort's back. Gibbs wouldn't have done that if he didn't have some measure of regard for the man.
  • Mike Franks. Only one word to describe Mike Franks. Curmudgeon. He is blunt and frequently grumpy. Pairs up brilliantly with Gibbs, even though the two of them are poles apart in many ways. Gibbs needs to be doing, Franks is content to sit on his butt and watch the world go by. My favorite Mike Franks episode was "Judgment Day". His expression when Jenny says to him, "And stop looking at my ass" was a classic. A wonderful example of saying everything whilst saying nothing at all.
  • Paula Cassidy. I liked Paula a lot. I felt she was a much more interesting character than Kate in many ways. I hoped when Kate was killed that Paula would step up as a regular character. From her shaky start in "Minimum Security" Paula became a really interesting character. The tension between her and Tony was good. Whilst taking her out in "Grace Period" made for a great story, I thought it was a tragic waste of a character with terrific material.
  • Brent Langer. Only got to see him in 3 episodes, and one of those was only in flashbacks. This was another character I thought had real potential. I would have loved to have found out why Brent jumped from the FBI to NCIS. A retrograde career move to many people. He had to have had a reason for doing it. I would liked to have known why, and to have seen more of this intriguing character.
Well, these are my favorites. Please share yours with us. I look forward to your feedback.

Abby - Why is she so popular?

8th August 2009

Now that I've got you talking with me previous entry on sniping among the characters, I thought I'd move on to Abby. Absolutely everyone loves/likes Abby - why? What is it about this particular character that has everyone saying how much they like her? I mean there are not many universally liked female characters; however, Abby is among this chosen few, although this despite the fact scriptwriters haven't really developed her character at all, unlike the other characters where we are seeing constant evolution, yet Abby remains unchanged. I think the only thing I've noticed is that her wardrobe seems to be a little less Goth this season from what I've seen so far. We know her character is intelligent otherwise she wouldn't be where she is doing what she does, and yet her interaction with characters tends towards the childlike, plus she hardly ever leaves the lab or the NCIS building. So what is her magnet? Is it just one single factor or do a lot of factors come into play here that make her popular with both sexes - yet another unique achievement in terms of screen characters.

Why do you think the scriptwriters have created such a lovable character? Do you think they knew beforehand that this was a character that would delve into viewers' hearts in the same way the Andrex (toilet paper) puppy does? Does this mean we view Abby as a kind of "human puppy"? I mean just what is it about this character that really attracts us to her?

Abby's a character I'm very fond of too, but for the life of me I doubt whether I could really pinpoint a specific reason/factor as to why. All I know is, that she's the one character whom to date has had no real detractors amongst viewers unlike the other female characters in the series, i.e. Kate, Ziva, Jenny, Hollis. I mean what makes her so different from the other 4 female characters I've just mentioned, who have as many in favour as they do against. In what way is Abby different from them? What has/hasn't she got in her personal/physical makeup that the others have?

As you can see I'm feeling curious/nosey this weekend, and would really appreciate other people's input on this.

Tony - McGee Sniping vs. Tony - Kate Sniping

7th August 2009

Re. one of the low points mentioned by MargyW in S6 with reference to the banter between Tony and McGee, which I'd classify as sniping more than bantering. As yet I have to watch the entire season, we've only just had 'Love and War' this week; however, I've noticed McGee's bantering has turned into sniping with a very aggressive bite to it, frequently hitting below the belt, as in his reference to Tony's 'romance' with Jeanne Benoit, which went to the dogs on Jeanne discovering he'd been working undercover to catch her father. This is very reminiscent of the way Kate used to snipe at Tony, aiming to hurt even if it meant stooping low.

We all know Tony likes to dig at his team-mates but he never aims below the belt in an attempt to really hurt the other person unlike Kate and McGee. With Kate it was to be expected since she had a permanent chip on her shoulder, demanding to be treated as an equal yet expecting deference because she was a woman, and a pretty prudish one at that. McGee on the other hand started out shy and bumbling and now he's gained more confidence in himself, we are getting to see he can be pretty malicious too, making true the adage "beware the worm turns", and McGee is a classic case of this. Perhaps Kate was too, since as we know she was the only girl in the family, so maybe her aggressive sniping came from there. We also notice with McGee that his barbed snipes are when Gibbs is not around or within hearing distance, making them all the more underhand, unlike Kate who had no qualms about sniping whoever was present, whose waspishness was present more often than not.

This aggressive sniping is quite an interesting turn of events, I wonder how far McGee will go before Tony swings a punch and they start a bar-room brawl. By all accounts, this hasn't happened in Season 6, but in the forthcoming season, what kind of McGee will we be seeing I wonder? Admittedly we had seen isolated moments of McGee's aggressive sniping/comments in previous seasons, but S6 really takes the biscuit in its constancy.

Abby and Tony are used to bantering and only go so far, even Ziva knows where the limit is, however, McGee is proving that like Kate, he doesn't know where the line is drawn and crosses it constantly without so much as batting an eyelid.

So, what does anyone else think about this?
