Greetings,
I just wanted to say hello to all of you. The trip to St. Louis was great. The Webster University graduation ceremony went off without a hitch. I'm now the proud owner of an Honorary Doctorate. I still can't believe it. No, you don't have to address me as "Dr. Carroll". I was able to make it back home in time to spend Mother's Day with my mom. Unfortunately, she spent Mother's Day in the hospital. She underwent a procedure this week which went well and we are hoping for a speedy recovery. Your well wishes and prayers for her have meant so much to me, and that's why I feel the need to keep you posted. Thank you, again. I promise to compose a longer letter to you soon. Things are quite hectic right now. As soon as things slow down a bit I will write and answer as many of your questions as possible. So...what did you think about our last episode "Semper Fidelis"? How was that for "Tiva"? More Soon, Rocky Carroll Coming Tuesday, May 19: In a TVGuide.com Q&A, Rocky Carroll shares an in-depth look at the NCIS season finale. http://www.tvguide.com/Celebrity-Blogs/Rocky-Carroll-NCIS-1006131.aspx |

Rocky Carroll, NCIS: More of Your Questions Answered! Hello again, Sorry for the delay, things have been quite busy. All's well — spent a very nice Easter weekend with my mother. thanks again for all the well wishes for her. Well, the questions are starting to pile up so, I'm not going to waste time. Let me try to answer a few. To Casimone: I'm glad you enjoy reading and responding to this blog. I plan to keep making entries even after we break for hiatus. Like I mentioned before, I really enjoy communicating with you all. I'll be travelling a bit this spring, so if there are a few lapses in the entries ... I hope you understand. PeachehKate: Yes, it's a great sense of accomplishment to finish my first full season on NCIS. The cast and crew are the best and they've made me feel like a part of the family. Richard Ross: Ahhh, that's the $64 question. Who knows when we will ever find out what Vance shredded in the final episode of Season 5. I'm hoping we will find out at the end of Season 15, know what I mean? Gibbs1: When I became a part of the NCIS team, I had a meeting with executive producer Charles Johnson and we talked about the role. I mentioned that I thought it would interesting if he were a fight fan and a fight-history buff. I imagined the wall in Vance's office covered with boxing memorabilia. He thought it was an interesting choice, and that started the whole boxing element to the character.

Rocky Carroll, NCIS : Season Finale Is "Quite a Ride!" Greetings, This will be a brief entry, so much going on at this time. My mother's doing pretty good, thanks for all your prayers and good wishes. Today is the first day of filming for the season finale. Of course I can't give anything away, but hang on to your hats, folks. It's going to be quite a ride to the end of Season 6. I have to answer this question first because one of our own is trying to win a bet. Yes, Shory22, you are right. I was a member of the cast of the Fox sitcom Roc from 1990 to 1993. If you ever want to know about actor's credits, there are a few data bases online that will help. I go to IMDb when I want to look up someone's credits; it's pretty thorough. When my daughter was in preschool we had an informal get-together at the school with all the kid's parents. I mentioned to a few of the parents that I was an actor. The next time I saw those parents, they had questions about my stint on Broadway, what it was like to work with Gene Hackman, was it fun working on The West Wing ... etc. Thank you, IMDb.

Rocky Carroll, NCIS : Leon from Cincinnati Hello again, Thank you for all of your well-wishes for my mother. I told her there's a wonderful community of folks that I chat with via the Internet who are pulling for her. I'm enjoying your comments and questions about NCIS . I think it's been an exciting season and it's not over yet. We just finished filming the second installment of Legend , the NCIS spinoff. Some of you have expressed apprehension about a spinoff. One thing is certain — the spinoff will get off to a good start since it will be shown as two NCIS episodes this season. Eventually the spinoff will succeed or not based on its own merits and if you, the viewing public, respond positively to it. Time will tell; I wish them the best. Time to respond to a few of your questions. First, I have to reply to inhim4448: Are your initials E.K.? if so, we have some catching up to do. Please let me know how best to get in touch with you. Erin Lee: You asked about scripts and the process of memorizing lines. Well, it helps to be a quick study. We do a table read of a new episode a couple of days before we start filming it. There are rewrites almost every day during the eight-day shooting period. So it's not a good idea to go home and memorize all your lines in a script because you could wake the next morning and find revised script pages at your front door. So, a lot of memorizing is done on the fly. When you have 14-hour shooting schedules, you find time to learn and memorize the new lines that have been added to a script. vjw: Thank you for your kind words. I will pass on your message to the wonderful Paula Newsome.

Rocky Carroll, NCIS: Knockout Punches Up the Mystery Hello again, Sorry I didn't make an entry last week. Unfortunately, my mother has had a bit of a health setback and had to go back to the hospital. She's out now and doing better. I want to thank those of you who've sent me your thoughts and well-wishes for my mother. I really appreciate it. Funny, when we filmed the episode Knockout, I was dealing with my mother's hospital care. The same scenario was true while watching the episode last Tuesday night. She was unable to see the episode, but I've got a DVD copy for when she gets home. I was glad the episode finally aired. From some of the feedback I've received, Knockout may have raised more questions than provided answers about Vance. Many of you are longtime followers of NCIS so I know this is not your first rodeo when it comes to storylines for the show. I'm as curious as you are as to how the Vance story will unravel in the future. Dorjean, you asked a very good question; the answer is yes. The mystery surrounding Vance was supposed to intensify after Knockout. The assumption by many was that most or all questions about this character would be answered in Knockout, but true to form the writers/producers have other plans. I'm not being coy, I simply don't know what's coming, and that's the best part for me. I want you all to know (and I know many of you have wondered about this) that the producers of NCIS read your comments. They read the blogs, fan forums, etc;. They know what you like and don't like, and I believe it impacts storylines to some degree. Just wanted to let you know.

The great site Fancast.com who gave us the Live chat with Pauley Perrette and Will bring the live chat with Rocky Carroll on Thursday the 12th caught up with Rocky on his way to a meeting and Rocky was nice enough to answer some questions....
Rocky, last time we spoke I mentioned that maybe one of the reasons why NCIS is gaining in popularity is because of your character, Director Leon Vance. At the time you modestly laughed it off, but as it turns out it may be true. What is becoming known as “The Director Vance” episode is hooking sweeps week for the show. Congratulations on your continued success. Rocky: Thank you very much. You know. it’s kind of like when you’re on a ball team. If you get the right reliever, or the right guy on defense, it shores up the team as a whole. If I’m an important piece of the puzzle, and everything holds up, that’s great. I’m still kind of modest about it because these ships will sail with or without you. As an actor you can believe that you are the reason for a show’s success, but these things are a brand name now. They’re like Coca-Cola. It’s like, with or without you, people are still gonna drink it. And CBS has the mentality for giving shows the chance to grow in the heart of viewers. Coke wasn’t a worldwide obsession overnight. Rocky: And the business model that CBS has, if the ratings slip a little, is to stay with it, let it grow and find an audience. Other networks are a little too quick to pull the trigger. That’s great for you as an actor, but it goes further than that. This character is really causing some buzz. Rocky: The dynamic is really working. You know it’s funny, the Director character is the one character that’s been there since day one, it’s just that now, for whatever reason, it’s clicked. It’s become an intricate part of the storyline.

The chat is Thursday at 3:00 pm ET/12 noon PT. It's here on this chat page on Fancast . You can set an email reminder now if you want and then make sure you join us to ask questions and chat about everything concerning “NCIS.” on Thursday. Here is the latest Rocky Carroll Celebrity Blog from the website of TV Guide...
Rocky Carroll, NCIS: Role Models, Spinoffs and Extreme Emotions Hello again, As always, thanks for reading and respond to this blog. I really enjoyed reading your responses to the last entry. It's great to hear about the people who motivate and inspire you. I have to believe that Ms. Streep is fully aware of the impact she's had on a generation of actors. I'd love to someday tell her how she impacted my life, but if that doesn't happen, it's still OK. This is a very interesting topic. When a performer understands their ability to influence others, it colors their decisions and gives them a profound sense of purpose. There are projects/roles that I have turned down or walked away from because I believed they could have a negative impact on others. Someone is always watching and taking their cues from your actions. Many times we impact others without knowing it. I'm very aware of that. I wish more people who are in the public eye had some degree of awareness. I don't think every public figure is equipped to be a "role model" for others. I think that's one of the most overused terms in the English language. How often do you read an article or see a clip of celebrities behaving badly and think, "Don't they know that people are watching?" "Don't they know that their actions could somehow influence/impact others?" I guess the answer is no, for some of them. Like I said, interesting topic. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Here is the latest Rocky Carroll Celebrity blog on TV Guide's website....
Rocky Carroll, NCIS: A Life-Changing Choice Greetings, I want to start this entry off-topic, if that's OK. I attended a black-tie viewing party of the Oscars two Sundays ago. Had a great time. I usually don't have much to say about the Oscars, but something about this year's show stuck with me. So much has been made of the phrase, "It's an honor to be nominated." The way the awards for best actor/actress and supporting actor/actress were presented, with five former winners personally praising each nominee's performance, was terrific. Each nominee was honored at the ceremony. You could see it on their faces, it was very moving. Who knows, the Academy may go back to their old way of presenting because the new way may have been time-consuming, but I hope they don't. I think they got it right. Our business is often depicted as a competitive sport where actors have no real regard for each other. That may be true in some cases, but not with most actors. We are inspired and motivated by each other. When I walk out of a movie theatre after seeing a terrific film, I can't describe the sense of pride I feel, just being in the same industry. Actors root for each other, cheer for each other and most important ... we steal from each other (LOL). Every actor that I know has a favorite performance by another actor that stays very close to their hearts. I have many, but there's one that stands out.

Rocky Carroll, NCIS: Final Thoughts on Tiva and ... Twitter? Hello all, Well, I learned something very important from the last blog entry. The way to get more people to respond to my blog is ... talk about Tony and Ziva! I've never had that many responses to one of my blog entries since I started this. I now realize that I've been going about this completely wrong. I've spent way too much time talking about myself and musing about my life, acting, artistic integrity, etc. What we really want to talk about is "Tiva." Thanks for leading me toward the light. All kidding aside, I found your comments very interesting. Some of your thoughts made me rethink my opinion of the subject. I going to give my final thought on the Tony/Ziva relationship (I'm sure Michael [Weatherly] and Cote [de Pablo] will be glad to know that) and it struck me soon after I started reading your responses. If any team could make an on-screen romance work, the writers/producers of NCIS could. If Tony and Ziva ever do evolve into a full-scale romance, I'm sure it would be unlike anything we're used to seeing. There's an old saying: "Be careful what you wish for ... you might get it." Who knows what the future holds?

Rocky Carroll has done it all. Comedy on the sitcom Roc, drama on Chicago Hope and lots of theater. He's currently playing NCIS Director Leon Vance on the CBS series NCIS. He talks about the difference between theater and Hollywood, working with his buddy Mark Harmon again and why NCIS has managed to go for six seasons. Question: You have a pretty extensive theater background. How did you get involved with acting to begin with? Rocky Carroll: I think it has more to do with location than anything else. When I grew up in Cincinnati, OH, in 1974, the Board of Education set up the performing school, similar to the New York performing arts school and it was in walking distance from my school. So the art teacher at the elementary school that I was already going to said, 'You're a class clown. You're always getting in trouble for being obnoxious. So audition for this school.' And literally, that's how it happened...I went in and from grade 6 through the rest of my education. Q: I know you've done a lot of Shakespeare. Do you have a favorite role? RC: A favorite role. Let's see. I've done so many of them...it wouldn't be any of the big ones. I think Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet would be my favorite role. I've never played it but I would love to do it.

Rocky Carroll, NCIS: Everybody's Got Something to Hide Greetings, First, I want to thank all of you for your kind words, prayers and well-wishes for my mother. It means a lot. She's currently in an aftercare facility and doing well. We've had to add a few more chairs to her room at the facility. There are a few members of the nursing staff who are NCIS fans. My mother's room has become a very popular place on Tuesday nights at 8 pm. I guess word got around that Mrs. Carroll's kid is "Director Vance." I make sure to visit her in the afternoon on Tuesdays. I'd hate to disrupt their Tuesday-night ritual. I watched "Deliverance" Tuesday night (did I mention that I never watch an episode before it airs?), and it was terrific. Wasn't it great to have "Mike Franks" back ? I absolutely love that character, and Muse [Watson] plays the hell out of it! I love the Gibbs/Franks relationship. I wish we could see Franks more often; I'll put that in the suggestion box at work. A couple of things for you to keep in mind: One of the central subjects in "Deliverance" was Gibbs' black ops file. So, Vance has a file on Gibbs and Gibbs has a file on Vance. Interesting. "Taylor Carlson," I just read your message and you said the same thing. There was a scene in Vance's office where the two talk about Gibbs' file. Gibbs says, "I got nothing to hide" Vance replies, "Everybody's got something to hide." Words to remember, folks.

Rocky Carroll, NCIS: A Labor of Love Hello all, I'm so very glad to be sitting at my computer and writing to you again! Hello Berk, Jonih59, Dorjean, Mrs. Grimm, Jaebianca, Dutchgirl, Taylor Carlson, Margy W., Keren, Erin Lee, Arwest, Leni, Obriensg .... and everyone else who reads and responds to this blog. Please take no offense if I didn't mention your name. These were the ones that I remembered off hand. Please know that whenever I answer a question or respond to any of you, I will always address you by name. I'm sorry that I've been unable to write for a while. So much has happened since I wrote to you, wishing you happy holidays. My 82-year-old mother came across the country to visit for the holidays. A few days after Christmas, she suffered a heart attack. I was able to get her to a hospital in time. She's doing OK and is on the road to recovery. At the same time, I began work on the Vance-centric"NCIS episode. We just finished filming it last week. I think you will be quite surprised at what you are going to learn about Leon Vance from this episode. It was a true labor of love. I was shooting every day, then doing whatever I could for my mother every evening. The last month has been surreal for me. I truly missed communicating with you. I'm sure you understand. I'm still dealing with issues relating to my mother's care. Just know that she's well and on the mend.

From the website of TV Guide here is the latest Rocky Carroll Celebrity Blog Entry... Season's Greetings, To all of you who read and respond (and to those who read and don't respond) to this blog, I want to wish you the best for the holidays. This blog has become very special for me, and I want to thank you all for making that possible. When I was asked to start a blog for TVGuide.com, I was reluctant for a number of reasons. Well, I can honestly report that writing this blog is an absolute joy. I've never written a journal, kept notes or jotted down my thoughts before. This is new and unexplored territory for me. As I mentioned before, I was accustomed to interacting with an audience because I come from the theatre. Thank you for your questions, comments, musings, quips, etcetera. Not only do I read them, I'm informed by them. Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the story in my last blog. I wanted to add a footnote to that story. I described in detail the practical "toothpick" joke that the cast played on me. I'm not sure that I made it clear to you that I thought it was absolutely hilarious! Once the director mercifully yelled "Cut," we laughed for five minutes. To me, that practical joke was the cast's way of saying, "Welcome to the NCIS team." I'm smiling as I write this. Well, I'm behind on my Xmas shopping, and time's running out. Best wishes to all of you, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and happy New Year. Until next week, R.C. http://www.tvguide.com/Celebrity-Blogs/Carroll-NCIS-Holiday-1001141.aspx

Here is the latest blog entry from Rocky Carroll on TV Guide's website
I want to thank every one who responded to my first entry. Honestly, I didn't expect a response at all. Imagine my surprise when I started reading them all!I want to answer a couple of questions regarding NCIS. First, I'm having the time of my life working on the series. The cast has been incredibly warm and welcoming to me. It's an absolute pleasure to share the screen with Mark Harmon again. There's a mutual level of respect and trust that allows us to play adversaries without becoming adversarial in real life. If I told you just how much fun we have playing characters that clash with each other, it might take away some of the edge that we've managed to create. So, I'll leave it at that! I've learned that most people don't have a different value system, even when it comes to entertainment. What I mean is that the same yardsticks we use with friends or people close to us, we often use with shows, films and characters that appeal to us. Fans of NCIS love the show. They've followed Gibbs and his team for five seasons. Suddenly, there's a new character this season, "Vance." I know that you have to earn an audience's trust and approval. It's important. People don't always respond immediately with approval. It takes time for a new character to be accepted, especially for a series the caliber of NCIS. Those of you who are on the fence about the addition of "Leon Vance" to the NCIS team... I totally understand. Some of you may never approve, and that's OK, too. It's a very different dynamic than the one before. We're still figuring out how Vance will ultimately fit in. It will take some time. As for the document that Vance shredded from his personal file at the end of last season.... that too will require patience from everyone! More soon, Rocky Carroll
