Scene: but not heard - wordless quotesThis is a featured page

Gibbs and other characters have an ability to communicate without words. As these classic moments do not fit on the NCIS Quotes page, we give them a home here.

Episode: Terminal Leave
Scene: Gibbs' car: Gibbs driving, Kate, McGee in back, Tony in front passenger seat
Silent Quote: Team has driven away from guard duty after solving bombing of a navy pilot's car and then a second car bomb near her house. On the drive home they get a call from Abby and Gibbs realises that it was a neighbour who did the second bomb, not the original bombers. The pilot's killer has not been caught! But by the time they reach the house and storm in, guns drawn, the pilot has killed the baddie.
Before Abby's call, the team were discussing whether they have ever special ordered anything from a shop/supplier and were having a lighthearted debate. Kate and Tony do it all the time. Gibbs and McGee say they haven't. After the mad dash back to the pilot's house, finding a dead body and the very dramatic upheaval of almost letting the pilot get killed, they are back in the car, sobered. And McGee calmly picks up the conversation where they left off (as if nothing happened), saying "You know, I DID special order once". Kate just stares at the guileless McGee and then barks with laughter, then Tony turns to stare at him and cracks a grin and then, Gibbs, unbelieving that McGee could still be back on such a trivial topic after the drama of the case, gives just the tiniest lopsided smile and the phoof freezes it. A Mexican wave of different smiles around the car...
Episode: Kill Ari
Scene: Gibbs in the rain, realises Ari is shooting again
Silent Quote: Gibbs in the rain, walking on the pavement next to the windows to Abby's lab, when he hears the bullet that breaks Abby's window. The coffee hits the ground as he starts sprinting.
Episode: Bury Your Dead
Scene: the team arrives at the site of the car bomb
Silent Quote: Having seen Tony's car blow up, whilst watching the surveillance in MTAC, the team arrives at the bomb site, to see a charred body behind the steering wheel. Slow-mo of Gibbs, Jen, McGee and Ziva arriving, looking, absorbing the implications of what they are seeing.
When Ducky arrives (not having watched the bomb in MTAC) and observes Jen's reaction to situation, he comments to Gibbs that it is almost as if she blames herself. Gibbs says nothing. Ducky is moved to ask whether Jen should blame herself and watches Gibbs carefully for the response.
Episode: SWAK
Scene: decontamination in the showers
Silent quote: Gibbs, Tony, McGee and Kate are in adjacent showers, scrubbing vigorously with bars of soap. They're discussing the possibilities of what the powdered substance could be when Tony mentions that he was hoping it was honey dust. Kate asks what honey dust is, and as Tony begins to explain, Gibbs jumps in, detailing that its brushed over the body, leaving skin feeling silky smooth, and as sweet as honey. Tony, Kate and McGee are silenced, as we see all three heads poke out of their stalls to stare in the direction of Gibbs' stall. There is clear shock, wonder, and disgust on their faces, at the thought of how their boss would be so well acquainted with such an erotic product.
Episode: Frame Up
Scene: Tony's gaol monologue
Silent quote: Gibbs comforts Tony but says not a single word in the entire scene. He does give him a headslap for being so defeatist, though.
Episode: Frame Up
Scene: Tony in the interrogation room, drum solo
Silent quote: Tony, putting on a performance of the unworried innocent victim (when he is a worried innocent victim), passes time by doing a drum solo. His drumming becomes the soundtrack to a montage showing what all the others are doing in the rest of NCIS HQ, with the NCIS team in a race against the FBI agents, to secure copies of the evidence before it is confiscated by the FBI. At the end of the solo, Tony looks in the two-way mirror and starts fussing with his hair. Mr Cool.
Episode: Ex-Files
Scene: finale, in Gibbs' basement: Mann plays Kelly's tape and sees into Gibbs world
Silent quote: Mann, in Gibbs' absence, sets about putting the sandpaper tools together for a late evening of sanding the boat. She hits play on Gibbs' cassette player, surprised that he has music. She listens to the plinky music (piano of Hush Little Baby...Mockingbird Song) and is curious and surprised at Gibbs' taste in music. But then Kelly's child voice and Shannon's wife voice come on, and Mann realises that Gibbs is still listening to them long after their deaths, and still mourns them. By the time the tape finishes, Gibbs has entered, is sitting on the stairs down to the basement, listening, and watching Mann. And the tape is so poignant and so full of might-have-been. And Mann knows. And Gibbs knows that he cannot pretend. And their eyes meet and it is the end.
Episode: Bloodbath
Scene: Gibbs finds Abby in the elevator
Silent Quote: Gibbs has ordered McGee to work on computer stuff with Abby but McGee points out that they would have to get her out of the elevator first. So Gibbs goes to the lift and the doors open to reveal Abby sitting in the corner, on the floor. And Gibbs' reaction is to absorb the scene, enter, turn around and slide down beside her. Solidarity. On her terms.
Scene: Abby in Gibbs' basement
Silent Quote: Later, in Gibbs' basement, Abby is so drunk, she's not thinking straight. Gibbs allows her to manhandle his tools and damage his boat. She asks why she's feeling guilty, and she admits that she thinks it is her fault. Gibbs says "Maybe it is" and Abby goes through the mental process of reclaiming her confidence. When she finally gets there, Gibbs just sits back and smiles. Abby's gonna be just fine, and he knows it.
Episode: Twisted Sister
Scene: elevator scene Gibbs and McGee
Silent Quote: Gibbs has challenged McGee as to why he didn't come to Gibbs straight away, and McGee has explained that he would not take a risk with his sister, because she is his sister. And Gibbs contemplates him, in silence, absorbing this defiance and utter conviction in McGee, who is so opposite to a rule-breaker. And suddenly Gibbs' body language changes: we know he accepts that McGee is right. Gibbs does say "apology accepted", turns and starts the lift. And two silent characters become visible; integrity and loyalty.
Episode: Hiatus
Scene: Ziva and Abby in the lab
Silent Quote: The stress of the case is building for Abby who doesn't appreciate Ziva's attitude toward Gibbs's injury, and when Ziva jokes that Gibbs guts would look "more coffee brown than red" Abby stares at Ziva for a second, and then suddenly slaps her. Ziva immediately slaps back. Then, Abby slaps her one more time, and Ziva slaps back again. McGee looks on in an odd expression of mixed wonder and fear.
Episode: Hiatus
Scene: Ziva in the restroom
Silent Quote: Ziva has just come from her slap fight with Abby which was initiated by the apparent lack of care on Ziva's part about Gibbs being in the hospital. In this scene, Ziva runs the tap, cupping her hands under the water and washing it over her face. From the side, we see Ziva with her face dripping wet. She stares at herself in the mirror. She blinks hard and a single tear streaks down her face. The view then switches to behind Ziva so we can see her reflection as she struggles to keep more from falling.
Episode: Hiatus Part II
Scene: Ziva goes to visit Gibbs
Silent Quote: Ziva has just told Gibbs that she killed her own brother to save him. As she finishes speaking, the composure she's tried so hard to maintain the entire season breaks down and she starts sobbing. Gibbs looks at her for a second in complete sympathy and understanding before pulling the newest team member into a hug, cradling her head as she cries into his shoulder.
Episode: Grace Period
Scene: McGee sitting on the floor in Abby's darkened lab
Silent Quote: McGee's sitting forlorn, leaning against the wall, watching Abby work, absorbing the idea that it was his friend who died in the bombing and mere luck that led to Cassidy's team being killed instead of Gibbs' team, that day. McGee has survivor guilt. Abby offers comfort and is caught by Gibbs, so she explains it was a squatting hug (squg). Gibbs merely extends a hand down to McGee to pick him up and send him back to work.
Episode: Suspicion
Scene: McGee and Tony looking for the town where the DB's at
Silent Quote: McGee is using the plasma and the clicker thing with Tony by him looking for the town on the map. They are unable to find it and when Gibbs comes by asking about it, Tony says, "Boondocks, boss." Ziva asks what boondocks are and Tony and McGee start doing "Dueling Banjos."
Epsiode: The Bone Yard
Scene: In the NCIS Gym
Silent Quote: Gibbs and Tony go to get into the boxing ring to spar. Tony puts on head protector. Gibbs picks up his, looks at it, looks at Tony, laughs and tosses it aside. The realisation creeps across Tony's face that if he continues to wear his, he'll look a wuss in Gibbs' eyes. He reluctantly removes his head protector and gets into the ring with Gibbs.

Episode: Last Man Standing
Scene: Reunion of Ziva with Gibbs, Abby and McGee in the bull pen
Agent Lee is waiting for the lift. Doors open and Ziva steps out. They greet each other. Lee has just said goodbye to Gibbs and is leaving: Lee got a handshake and very quiet farewell. Ziva gets an ecstatic greeting from Abby and a full, wraparound, chin on your shoulder hug from Gibbs...who watches Lee enter the lift and looks at Lee until the doors slide shut. Gibbs is unsmiling but he is hugging Ziva for much longer than etiquette requires, and is rocking her slightly (as one rocks a prodigal child returned home safe?).

Episode: Kill Ari: Part Two
Scene: Gibbs and Ziva in his basement with the body of Ari. Ziva has killed Ari to save Gibbs and just explained to him who Ari was.
Silent Quote: Gibbs doesn't say a word he looks down at Ari as it sinks in and then leaves Ziva alone in the basement with the body, as he passes Ziva he very briefly touches her hand.

Silent Quote: Celia just said she'd write the confession all down to McGee. Gibbs gives McGee a look of approval and a small smile.

Episode: Caged
Scene: Abby giving McGee a compliment about the telephone call he made to the mechanics
Silent Quote: When Abby says: "The time in the big house really changed you, McGee...... I like it.". The sheer look of surprise on Tony's face, the quiet smile of admiration by Ziva and the smile of a man who likes the compliment and knows he deserves it by McGee
Episode: Collateral Damage
Scene: Local Bar Gibbs gets a bourbon
Silent Quote: After having observed Agent Lee several times walking through the squad room, and a reassurance from Ducky to trust himself, he places Agent Langer's photo ID on the wall honoring "Those Fallen in the Line of Duty." He now recognizes that he was right about Langer-that he would have been a good agent. He smiles to himself as he sits back down at the bar.
Episode: Dagger
Scene: On a Metro bus
Silent Quote: Agent Lee is being held as a human shield by the person that was forcing her to sell govt. secrets. She struggles with him and gets his gun aimed away from Gibbs and mouths for him to shoot. He questions her with a look of are you really sure? And she strongly nods yes. Gibbs then drops them both. He then goes to Lee and gives her a forgiving look as she dies. He then takes her badge to pass to her sister/daughter.

Episode: Truth or Consequences
Scene: In the terrorists' camp
Silent quote: After the shooting starts outside, Tim gets Ziva
& Tony untied and they assist her to walk out the door and down the corridor. As they near the corner a terrorist comes around that same corner and gets ready to fire at them. Two shots ring out and the bad guy goes down. Then the trio turns the corner and see an outline of a man in a ghillie suit, holding a rifle. Tim and Tony both get relieved looks on their faces and almost smile. Ziva barely reacts. And our "functional mute" says "Let's go home." And you can see the group start to relax a little.

I love the scene where Gibb's father has just given him the keys to his restored mustang??? and Gibbs comes pealing around the corner. The camera focuses on his face and there is a look of utter glee and happiness in driving that car. The look on the team's face is hilarious.

Sketter Episode: Frame Up- The drum solo... 15 Jul 8 2009, 8:40 AM EDT by Sketter

I was just telling my husband the other day how well done that one was. My husband will drum on the table, and I will instantly think of that. I think that it is just so well-crafted as you watch the scene of his team members frantically gathering evidence. Music would have spoiled it.

Also, that same episode, when Tony is in the jail cell and Gibbs head-slaps him, he also gives him a slight touch on the chin to "keep his chin up". It is hard to catch, but I think it is there... did anyone else notice it?

Tony and McGee's "Dueling Banjos" was the best part of the episode for me! Ever since I first watched it, I just keep hearing the banjos... It was an awesome scene of pure fun between Tony and McGee, something you don't often see.
