Real world vs NCIS - just nitpicking
Dec 22 2008, 3:58 PM EST
I liked the episode, crafted very much to enable Tony to be a hero, and nothing wrong with that, but as a writer myself, I just automatically look at these things and why they couldn't have done them better. (AKA my way!) I'm not above contriving situations myself, but I try to be a bit more realistic. Why does Gibbs go in without backup from his team? They're his team, he should enlist their aid. Instead it's only because his team works on their own, along with Jennie, that Tony is there to save the day. Why does he back the car up all the way into the water? Even if the locks hadn't shorted out and the steering wheel not gone all kerfluie, they would have had to surface and been shot like fish in a barrel. They should have shown him trying to turn the wheel or something to get started going in a different direction, but a gunshot blows a tire and over they go, or something. With the windows closed, no water could have gotten into the car. They would have been trapped because with the water presssre outside, the doors would have been sealed shut even if they could have gotten them open. It's because they couldn't get the windows open that they would have died. And why did Maddie lose consciousness immediately, anyway! The way *I* would have written it, Gibbs and Maddie are trapped in the car. Explain to the audience through dialog that the doors won't open aginst the water pressure, and they can't equalize the pressure since t hey can't get the windows open. So they'll suffocate. Could have been a nice moment there between the two. Then, Tony arrives. He manages to get the windshield off --- ah, now I think..the water got in through the bullet holes...but it would have been a slow process!) even though he knows that he's dooming Gibbs because Gibbs is still trapped by the steering wheel. So Maddie won't need mouth to mouth but Gibbs will. 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

I hate to point this out... but when you're trapped in a car underwater... you wouldn't have any breath for any sort of dialog.... except for one last expletive.

I don't know where you got your info on cars. Doors being closed are lightly sealed not air tight. Water can also get in through the air vents, where do you think the heat and air comes from? Also the Engine compartment is not water tight, most of what is there is for sound reduction. If you are going to write something or pick someone apart another get your facts straight. I know from working in a body shop for 3 years, and asking questions. As I also like to write.

Well, gee. In other words you think Gibbs was able to hold his breath while under water for more than seven minutes. (I'm estimating it would have taken at least 5 minutes for Tony to get there from where he was when the car went over, to the 2 or more minutes he spent trying to open up the windshield while Tony was there). That's pretty good!Do you find this valuable? |

Speaking as a writer myself, actions speak a lot more than dialog possibly can. I'm thankful that the NCIS writers value our intelligence enough to NOT have to spell everything out to us *smile*. Sure, in a very literal sense, writers take certain liberties....not everything is "real", or would happen in the "real world". When framed in Fiction, I think they do a pretty damned good job being convincing enough for us. More importantly to this particular episode is the manner in which they developed a story that went way beyond "a car being underwater with people trapped in it". It was about things much deeper than the water they were in, if you get my meaning *smile*.

" It was about things much deeper than the water they were in, if you get my meaning *smile*."Oh, that's very true - very emotional episode. I was spurred on to write my own (coff coff) version of the ending. Hope it's okay share the link here. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4734387/1/Requiem_Finale_Retold Do you find this valuable? |
